High Humidity Levels In Your Home: Is Your AC Struggling?

We often receive phone calls in the middle of the summer that their home is way too hot, and condensation is starting the build along the window. It's a very important problem to address!

The root of the problem could be something as simple as a leaky duct, or it could be an aging HVAC unit, but the problems will not go away unless they are addressed. To make matters worse, high condensation is not only uncomfortable and poses health risks, but if left unaddressed, it will create a whole new set of problems with peeling paint, warped wood, and mold growth. We're not trying to scare you, but we are trying to demonstrate the importance of the problem you're facing.

Understanding Humidity and AC Function

An AC unit works by removing moisture from the air through the evaporator coil. It then spits the water out into a condensate drain line. It is not a perfect process, but it is definitely good enough to remove 50% - 70% of the moisture from the air. So, if you're seeing humidity build along your window, it is definitely cause for concern, but the HVAC system is built to prevent that from happening.

Signs of High Humidity

Condensation on the window is one of the more visible signs of high humidity in the home, but there are other signs that can appear, too.

  • Sticky or clammy feeling in the air

  • Condensation on the windows or walls

  • Musty odors

  • Increased allergy symptoms

Potential Causes of High Humidity

  1. Undersized or Aging AC Unit: an undersized or older AC unit might struggle to maintain proper humidity levels

  2. Dirty or clogged filters: the air filters clean your air, but they also allow for proper air flow. If they haven't been changed in a while it could be restricting the airflow, and not allowing the AC unit to do its job of dehumidifying.

  3. Leaky ductwork: A leak in your ducts will not only let out the cold air before it enters your home, but it will also introduce unconditioned, humid air into the home.

  4. Malfunctioning components: If all of the above are not the root issue, it could be a specific component like the evaporator coil or refrigerant that is malfunctioning.

When To Call a Professional

At Scenic Air, we are more than happy to take your call and see if we can diagnose your issue quickly over the phone.
